In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Volkswagen Microbus was one of the most recognizable vehicles on the road. And for fans of the era’s unique charm, there’s still no other vehicle that can really compare. But, have you ever wondered what made this vehicle so iconic?
Today the team at Schworer Volkswagen is taking you on a trip down memory lane to explore the history of the VW bus and share what’s to come for the future with the much-anticipated Volkswagen ID. Buzz release date!
Before the famous Volkswagen bus brought peace and love to the Woodstock music festival in 1969, it was known as the VW Transporter thanks to its capacity to haul a lot of passengers. Starting its journey in 1949, the first VW bus prototype was built with the same chassis as the Volkswagen Beetle until VW realized this configuration wasn’t strong enough and added a ladder frame underneath the bus.
After rolling off the assembly line, Volkswagen launched the first generation of VW buses, otherwise known as T1 models, by offering eight different models for buyers to choose from. This rollout featured the Kombi VW Bus with removable seats, a dedicated cargo van, and a Plattenwagen-inspired pickup truck.
Back in the early days of the VW bus, the number of windows on a vehicle was a big selling point, which is why many VW bus models came with an assortment of window options. Buyers could choose VW buses with 11 or 15 windows placed around the vehicle, or upgrade to 21-23 window VW buses, which allowed more natural light into the van.
It wasn’t until the 1950s when the Volkswagen bus was exported to the United States that the brand realized the bus lacked the horsepower necessary to maneuver the wide-open highways of the U.S. Thus an upgraded 72.7 cubic-inch engine was installed to replace the previous 69 cubic-inch engine and offered 30-hp.
By the end of the first generation (1949-1967), the VW bus had solidified itself as a cultural icon after VW bus owners started painting it with peace signs and psychedelic colors, the vehicle quickly became known as the hippie bus.
So what’s in store for the future? As of 2023, there have been six generations of the VW bus, each with its own unique upgrades and features. And with the current era of technology and electric vehicles on the rise, the future looks bright for the Volkswagen bus. Volkswagen has finally confirmed that the classic Volkswagen Microbus will return to Lincoln in 2024 as the VW ID. Buzz! The most significant change is that this new model will be an all-electric vehicle, designed for families (and friends), and ready for any adventure you can imagine.
The exterior styling of the electric Volkswagen bus will be based on the well-loved and iconic looks of the original Type 2 model. Although there are certainly some major changes under the hood and inside the cabin, it undoubtedly stays true to the original model’s spirit.
